Find a Solution Proposal

Video Reflection
In our proposal we stated that we wanted to improve Stafford Lake County Park. Our goal was to bring awareness to how humans have impacted the native inhabitants land. We wanted to make sure Stafford Lake was in the best possible condition. Our group worked very well together and everyone did their part. We worked collaboratively and there were little to no disagreements. One thing we did well was research all the different types of animals and plants that called Stafford Lake home. Another successful thing was our ability to work together. One thing we could've improved was getting the video finished sooner instead of pushing it off a little further to focus on other projects. We also could have all focused on editing the video instead of one person doing all of it. I learned how humans are affecting natural environments. This is important to me because I now see the importance of preserving natural land. It is important to society to maintain a high carrying capacity and not lose any biodiversity.

Socratic Seminar Reflection
I believe global warming does exist. After the Industrial Revolution, humans have been releasing large quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The amount of gases rose by 80%. Also, cutting down trees release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The temperature of the Earth has rose between 0.4 and 0.8 degrees Celsius and is predicted to rise between 1.4 and 5.8 degrees Celsius by 2100. As a society we can decrease the amount of greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere. We can do this by switching from gas powered cars to electrical cars. As an individual, I can start using compost bins which reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Week 1: There hasn't been much change in our terrarium. The organisms in our terrarium include a venus flytrap, worms, moss, and insects to feed the flytrap. Here is a picture from week one.
Week 2: There is not much change in our terrarium other than a venus flytrap dying.
Week 3: There is no new growth in our terrarium.
Week 4: We cut off any dead Venus flytraps.
Terrarium Reflection
We stayed close to our proposal and didn't really detour from our original plan. We chose to represent a rainforest ecosystem in our terrarium. For our main plant we had a venus flytrap. We also had moss scattered throughout the terrarium. We fed the venus flytraps with flies and any other suitable insect. We also put in worms for the soil. Our terrarium didn't do as well as what we would've hoped. The moss stayed alive, but didn't have any changes. Throughout the weeks we were doing this project, our venus flytrap slowly started to die. To be honest, I'm not really sure why, because we fed it and watered it regularly. We didn't really see any major changes to our terrarium. In the end, we still had a few venus flytraps alive and well, which was a major victory. There weren't any apparent matter cycles in our terrarium.

Bee Colony Collapse Disorder Reflection
In this project we learned about bee colony collapse disorder. We learned how bee populations are decreasing due to a variety of factors. The main factor contributing to this disorder are neonicotinoids that affect the queen of the colony. Also, the stress of the bees being constantly moved to pollinate crops cause the bees to die. Scientists are working on finding a way to vaccinate bees against neonicotinoids. They are also trying to find alternatives for using bees to farm, so they don't tire quickly. To view data better, we made curve fits. I learned how they work and how to use them. I learned that different types of data are better for different types of graphs. For example, some data might fit better on an exponential graph opposed to a polynomial graph. Before this lab, I didn't know anything about bees. I now know that bees are extremely important to our environment and it is crucial that humans take good care of the little creatures. I learned what neonicotinoids are and how they are affecting the bee population. I also learned how crucial of a role the queen plays in a colony and how important it is to preserve her health.
NPDD Lab Reflection
In this lab we tested different types of plants to see if they possessed any antibacterial qualities. Both the positive and negative controls in our samples worked accordingly. The positive control had a clearing around it, while the negative did not. Our test samples did not work. They didn't possess any antibacterial qualities considering there were no clearings around them. One error could've been that we let the bacteria grow for too long. This type of test is important to biotech because it allows a way to discover new medicines. Biodiversity is important to biotech because they are plenty of plants that haven't yet been discovered that might have antibacterial activity.
