For this project we researched the heart including the structure and function of the valves. After doing thorough research we designed and built a heart valve prototype.

Process of Making the Heart
Our model represents blood flow through the heart and how it can't flow backward. For example when you blow one way through the tube the saran wrap opens and simulates the blood being able to flow through the heart, when you blow the other way though the tube the saran wrap closes up and simulates blood not being able to get through. The materials we used for this project are construction paper, saran wrap, string and tape. Our model is an accurate representation of heart valves as it shows a major function of the heart--controlling which way the blood flows.

Reflection:
This project was complicated. We didn't know where to start as we didn't really know a whole lot about how the heart is built and how it functions. We did a bunch of research which gave us a better insight into what exactly we were doing. At the end of the project we all felt more knowledgeable. Actually constructing the heart wasn't that difficult. We just searched up a how-to video and were able to build it with materials we found around school. A pro of this project was having the opportunity to learn more about the heart. Another pro of this heart was working together with my senior capstone project partners to build a foundation of good teamwork. A con of this project was not being given any supplies to build the heart--we had to search around the school for the things we needed. Another con of this project was having no formal lessons and having to learn everything on our own--my team and I feel like we could've made a more accurate heart if we had more formal direction. Something I think everyone in the class can do better is time management; we did all our work on time though.
